Kimberley Diamond.

The Kimberley

A Flawless, 70-carat, step cut, champagne-colored diamond that was found in the Kimberley Mine, South Africa. It was recut into this modern shape in in 1921 from a large, flat stone that was once in the Russian Crown Jewels. In 1958, the stone was again recut by it's owners,

Baumgold Bros., New York City, to improve the proportions and increase brilliancy. It now weighs 55.09 carats and is valued by the firm at $500,000, but is probably worth considerably more. Baumgold Bros. sold the stone in 1971 to an undisclosed collector. Source: Diamonds: Famous, Notable and Unique (GIA).

Some of the upcoming stones are:

The Begum Blue
The Heart of the East
The Black Star of Queensland

The Empress Eugenie
The Paul I
The Khedive
The Golconda Pears
The English Dresden

Here are some stones that I am presently looking for photos and information on:

President Vargas ... largest gem cut from the stone weighs 44.17 carats
Brunswick Blue ... circa 13 carats, pear, dark blue (The diamond is a lost stone --

in this case a good illustration is what I am looking for)
Copenhagen Blue ... 45.85 carats, emerald, third(?) largest blue diamond in the world
unnamed ... 51.84 carats, round brilliant, blue, largest blue diamond in the world. (This and the Copenhagen Blue were both handled by Harry Winston at one t

ime.)

Here's something new: I have made estimates for the measurements of tw

o famous diamonds - the Blue Heart and the Porter Rhodes. I don't know their actual measurements, but I am researching it. I am going to post my estimate here and see how close I am (or not) to being correct.

The Porter Rhodes ... 21.65 × 21.65 × 13.09825 mm (assuming 60.5% dep

th, computes to 54.10 carats, actual weight is 54.04 carats)
The Blue Heart ... 20.035 × 20.035 × 12.121175 mm (assuming 60.5% depth, computes to 30.83 carats, actual weight is 30.82 carats)

The Porter Rhodes is an modern Asscher cut stone, which means its

width and length are equal or very near to it. I doubt the stone is going to be indentical in length and width down to the hundredth of a millimeter, but it will be fairly close. The stone is very well cut.

The piece was created by Bulgari and sold for $1,182,000 on May 28th, 1998, a record price for a piece of jewelry sold in Italy, also auctioned at Christie's.

Some Large and Unique Diamonds Seen on Ebay

The second largest diamond ever up for sale on Ebay. I have seen it up for auction
a number of times over the past year or two. The seller wants an opening bid
of $1 million. Here is the stone's website.

A 9.78-carat, D-color, VS-2 clarity pear shape. No fluorescence. The stone seems almost triangular, like a spear or arrowhead.

A natural Fancy Orangey-Pink diamond, offered by Diamonds By Lauren on Ebay.
The stone weighs 1.49 carats. "I don't notice any orange- but the GIA color
origin report indicates as Fancy Orangey-Pink. The GIA certificate is for color,
measurements, and shape. The clarity is not listed on this type of certificate.
In this case, the oval diamond is SI2." The diamonds surrounding the pink
oval are F-G in color (basically colorless), VS in clarity, and premium cut.
Diamonds by Lauren wants $40,000 for the opening bid. Unusual colors like this
will always boost a stone's price significantly, even if the stone isn't very large.

This 16.29-carat round diamond appeared on Ebay in April of 2002.
Its clarity was IF (Internally Flawless) and its color was G (near
colorless). The stone measured 16.36 × 16.57 × 9.95 mm, and had a
fluorescence grade of Medium Blue. The polish and symmetry were both
graded as Very Good. The seller wanted $380,000 for the opening bid,
and said the stone was appraised at $510,000.

A pair of natural Fancy Intense Brownish-Orange diamonds offered
on Ebay in May, 2002, by seller rottierick. The stones were
graded as having VS-2 clarity, a weight of 0.63 carats, and a cut grade
of Good. The seller wanted $1899 for the opening bid, but had the
Buy It Now option for $2599.

A very unusual Fancy Purplish-Red diamond weighing 0.34 carats. This stone appeared on Ebay in May of 2002. Bidding started at $1000. When I saw the auction, it had 11 bids and was up to $4150. Here is what the seller had to say about it: "Most people have never seen a Natural Red Diamond, most diamond dealers have never seen a red diamond. In fact their occurrence in nature is so rare that a leading specialist in the field of Colored Diamonds from the Geological Laboratory of America recently told me that GIA has issued certificates for red Diamonds less than 24 times, and of the 24 known to exist, over half of those certed weigh less than ½ of a carat in weight. This diamond is a gorgeous color, with a GIA certificate stating that the diamond is a Fancy Purplish Red, 0.34 carats, Oval Shape, color of origin Natural. If you are looking for the truly unique, and rarest of the rare in diamonds, this is it, it is quality not quantity. If you want a Red Diamond the worlds truly rarest gem specimen, This is an authentic collectors item, rarest of rare, very exotic hard to find piece. Natural Color, Natural Diamond." One of the most famous red diamonds is the Hancock Red Diamond, a stone that sold at auction in the late-1980's for $880,000 — and weighed only 0.95 carats. That comes to about $926,000 per-carat.

In June of 2002, this 10.97-carat Asscher cut diamond appeared on Ebay. The seller wanted $100,000 for the opening bid. The stone's clarity was VS-2 and the color grade was "N", slightly yellow. :) Here is what they had to say about it: The ring’s value was stated to be $500,000 on NBC’s The Today Show prior to the Oscars. This exaggerated price was for shock value, and there are certainly some stores that might try to sell the ring at that inflated price. At Mednikow, this ring would sell for a fair price of $125,000.

Diamond Weight Estimation

This is for estimating the weight of loose diamonds. I am searching for the formula for rose cuts, which are basically cabochons covered with triangular facets coming up to a point.

This section of my site was originally "Gemstone Weight Estimation", but I realized the formulas were meant for diamond. I know formulas for other gemstones exist, but I don't know what they are, or I would post them here.

3.52 is the specific gravity of diamond.

Gemcad Files of Famous Diamonds

by Robert W. Strickland

GemCad for Windows, created by Robert Strickland, is a computer-aided design (CAD) program for the design of gemstone cutting patterns. It runs under Windows 95 or later on PC compatibles with screen resolution of at least 800 x 600. GemCad simulates a faceting machine and shows you accurate 3-D views of the stone. GemCad understands symmetry, so you typically have to "cut" only a fraction of the facets to get the full design. GemCad can follow paths of light rays through the stone to allow you to optimize a design to minimize light loss. The end product is an accurate faceting diagram that shows several views of the stone with accurate angles, indexes and dimensions. The program has three main purposes:

(1.) Proof-cutting an existing diagram. Proof-cutting a design on the computer allows you to check the accuracy of the diagram and discover pitfalls before wasting valuable rough.

(2.) Editing a diagram. You can take an existing diagram and modify it to optimize its optical performance for different materials. You can scale a diagram to make it fatter or skinnier to fit a certain piece of rough.

(3.) Designing a stone from scratch. Advanced users can use GemCad to create new designs.

GemCad doesn't model curved surfaces or notches but is limited to convex designs that can be cut on any faceting machine.

GemCad for Windows Screen Shot

Here is a screen shot (reduced in size). You can see the path of a light ray through the stone. GemCad's screen is divided into four windows or “views. The Four View shows the stone from four different viewpoints. The Spin View shows a 3-D view of the stone that can be tilted and rotated. The Cutting Instructions are shown in a table at the bottom. The New Facet Info Box collects information for cutting a new tier of facets

Famous Diamonds

One of my major interests is diamonds, and famous diamonds, and gemology in general. Since there really is no web page dedicated just to famous diamonds, I decided to make this one. This page is strictly for educational purposes. I make no money off this page, and never intend to.

Birthstones
January—Garnet
February—Amethyst
March—Aquamarine or bloodstone
April—Diamond
May—Emerald
June—Moonstone, pearl, or alexandrite (the latter of which changes colors depending on the type of light hitting the stone and in gem quality is considered more valuable than diamond)
July—Ruby
August—Peridot or sardonyx
September—Sapphire
October—Opal or tourmaline
November—Topaz or citrine
December—Turquoise or zircon

If you read any of the captions, you might wonder what a carat is. Gemstones are measured in carats (not carrot). 142 carats is equal to one ounce. The old carat measurement was slightly more than the new carat. When I say old, I mean several hundred years ago...

Gold is measured in karats. For instance, 24 K gold means that 24 of the 24 parts of the metal are gold. 18 K means that 18 parts of the 24 are gold

Black diamonds come from space

By Richard A. Lovett
An exotic type of diamond may have come to Earth from outer space, scientists say. Called carbonado or "black" diamonds, the mysterious stones are found in Brazil and the Central African Republic. They are unusual for being the color of charcoal and full of frothy bubbles.

The diamonds, which can weigh in at more than 3,600 carats, can also have a face that looks like melted glass.

Because of their odd appearance, the diamonds are unsuitable as gemstones. But they do have industrial applications and were used in the drill bits that helped dig the Panama Canal.

Now a team led by Stephen Haggerty of Florida International University in Miami has presented a new study suggesting that the odd stones were brought to Earth by an asteroid billions of years ago

The findings were published online in the journal Astrophysical Journal Letters on December 20.

The scientists exposed polished pieces of carbonado to extremely intense infrared light.

The test revealed the presence of many hydrogen-carbon bonds, indicating that the diamonds probably formed in a hydrogen-rich environment—such as that found in space.

The diamonds also showed strong similarities to tiny nanodiamonds, which are frequently found in meteorites. "They're not identical," Haggerty said, "but they're very similar."

Astrophysicists, he added, have developed theories predicting that nanodiamonds form easily in the titanic stellar explosions called supernovas, which scatter debris through interstellar space.

The deposits in the Central African Republic and Brazil, he said, probably come from the impact of a diamond-rich asteroid billions of years ago, when South America and Africa were joined.

GOLD IN MASJID BHOG SADIQABAD

Pakistan has numerous mosques which are envy of the world because of their architecture as well as detailed decoration. This is our second post in the series of highlighting such grand mosque architecture in Pakistan. Our first post of this series was about masjid Mahabat Khan in Peshawar.

Today’s post is about the fomous Bhong Mosque located in a town called Bhong. Bhong mosque is famous for its architecture as well as the decoration done here. The extensive calligraphy done of verses from Quran here makes it one of a kind place in Pakistan. There are pictures of Islam’s holiest places framed in real gold.

The roof of the complex glitters with the extensive mirror work done on it. It is said that every square meter of this mosque has some decoration or design made on it. This mosque is a living catalog of decorative techniques for public buildings either invented or practised in both Pakistan and India. The architecture of the mosque and decorative patterns are mostly local. One major exception is a gateway which takes its design from a similar gateway in Baghdad

GOLD SKELETON

The Gold Skeleton takes on the appearance of a human skeletal system plated in a goldlike substance. In Portrait of Ruin it is mentioned directly that the substance it is covered in is not gold but an unknown exotic material.

In Portrait of Ruin as well as in Super Castlevania IV the Gold Skeleton's main method of attack is by wandering back and forth and lobbing gold plated bones at the player. The difference with in Portrait of Ruin would be its increased mobility, unusually high defense, the number and strength of the bones it throws, and the ability to hop as most skeletal enemies do. These sheer nuisances were frustrating by themselves but when grouped together in a mass number, the odds of survival dropped immensely.

However, from Portrait of Ruin is absent a gold plated variation of the Simon Wraith that was present in Super Castlevania IV. This gold take on the whip-toting skeleton behaved much like the normal version in which it wandered back and forth and would whip at the player when he got close.

In Curse of Darkness, the Gold Skeleton (Golden Bones) were much like the regular Skeletons but were stronger, harder, and had more Hit Points. They were the rarest enemy, being only in the mountains (found rarely in a group of Skeletons) and the Tower of Evermore. The hit points of the Gold Skeleton passed the number of hit points of every other enemy including Nuculais, being 12000.

OSCAR GOLD

byDarrelll J. BanksCrCr.

Last month we cNicole Kidman KidmaKidman Kidman has her little gold statue, named Oscar, she earned it for her role in "The Hours." The legend of Oscars' name, is that Betty Davis named this little gold fellow. See her biography. This month we cover structure and plot in three Oscar nominated movies from last year " Hotel Rwanda, the Aviator, and Ray."

Oscar gold is for those who want and need a struggle to create a film that according to Colombia DVD club includes Lawrence of Arabia ( 1962).

As a screenwriter I suggest you read the scripts from last years Oscar nominated filmsDVD'st the DVD's and learn frPearsonis, Pearson, Hackfordnd Hackford. This past month I caught four Oscar named films. I will cover "Million Dollar Baby in a few months. As a writer one should know structure, for the blue print of an Oscar winner is not the same fogardeavant garde popular cinema.

These three films marvel at structure for though each year screenwriters are informed dramavouge not in vouge, dramas are the show piece of the major studios. The studios lobby hard for their starring films. The Oscars attest to that. Each year Oscar winners and their counterparts are inDVD'sed with DVD's, press junkets and other incentives to grab their votes. This year Jaime Fox won for best actor, his performance was great, exceptional. But little Oscar should haveCheadleo Don Cheadle.

"In the Aviator" we are presented with a strong cast oCatehBlanchetted Cate Blanchett an Oscar for her performaHepburnKatheriSophiebOkonedot, Sophie Okonedo gave a stronger performance, and her written role had an imposed structure. In "the Aviator," we are faced with a protagonist who can do anyDiiCaprioeonardo Di Caprio portrays a strong Howard Hughes, but the structure of the movie does not allow character development.

From the opening scene of this epic film, we are shown that little Howard Hughes has a problem with his mother. From a long shot we watch mot as she stares at t his penis. Howard is around twelve. The imagery of this scene falls into play in Acts two and three of" the Aviator," yet the structure of act one limits the remainder of the film. The audience is driven to understand why Howard Hughes acted crazy one moment and sane the next by Act 1 Scene 1. But the premise of aviation, causes a loss of dramatic effect after Act one follows young Howard as he shoots a film with multiple cameras. Fixated or compulsive, your choice "the Aviator"'s premise is flawed after the first twenty minutes of the film. The pace is there, the plot established, yet it fails in so many ways that "Hotel RwanCheadleceeds.

FIFA GOLD

By Hansaan

The 2007 Central American Cup kicks off tonight and will send five teams from the sub-region to this summer's CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States. The competition will take place in San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador between 8 and 19 February, and will be made up of one four-team group and another section made up by just three sides.

In this, the ninth edition of the competion, Group One will consist of outsiders Belize, Guatemala - still favourites despite their recent international wobbles under Hernan Dario Gomez

- Nicaragua and the hosts.

Group Two will pit ever-improving Panama against five-time and defending UNCAF champions Costa Rica and Honduras in a formidable looking three-way battle.

Despite only showcasing three teams, it is this latter group that is being widely tipped to provide the tournament's champion when the dust settles. With five Central American titles to th

eir name and having reached the last two FIFA World Cup™ finals (three overall), Costa Rica - led by new boss and former international legend Hernan Medford - will be overwhelming favourites to reach the semi-finals at least.

But pedigree and history alone will not do the job. Only just recently ending a four-game winless streak with a 4-0 win over Caribbean Cup finalists Trinidad and Tobago, the Ticos, banking on the attacking firepower of Rolando Fonseca and Alonso Solis, will need to rediscover their old form.

However, Panama, who amazingly reached the final of last year's CONCACAF Gold Cup in the USA and just sent their U-20 team to a third consecutive FIFA U-20 World Cup , are on a steep incline and will be keen on upsetting the Costa Ricans. Led by a new manager in former Costa Rican international and head coach Alexandre Guimaraes , the Canaleros will need to come to grips with the retirement of the fabled Dely Valdes brothers, Julio and Jorge, and push forward rising stars the likes of Luis Tejada and Ricardo Phillips. A recent 2-1 win over Trinidad andTobago will do Panamanian confidence no harm.

The Hondurans are to be led by Colombian head coach Reynaldo Rueda through the FIFA World Cup qualifiers for South Africa 2010 , but caretaker Jose de la Paz Herrera ,who takes the place of recently deceased coach Flavio Ortega , will hold the reins in El Salvador. The Catrachos will be desperate to pick up their first UNCAF crown since 1995 and stop the rot of a recent slide in fortunes. Despite having won the 1993 and 1995 events, Honduras have not quite managed to live up to their tag as rising stars in recent years. A recent 1-1 draw with Demark will no doubt boost hopes of a revival.

Over in Group One, the Salvadoran hosts will be hoping to create a stir on the back of a recent win over the Danes on home soil. The solitary goal came from Eliseo Quintanilla and thankfully ended a 12-game winless streak, with their last victory coming all the way back in August of 2004.

GOLD IN KA'ABA

According to Islamic belief, God ordained a place of worship on Earth to reflect a house in heaven. Muslims believe that Adam, the first man, was the first to build such a place of worship. According to the Qur'an, the Ka'ba that stands today was built by the prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) and his son Ismail (Ishmael).

According to archaeologists, the Ka'ba certainly predates Islam. It was rebuilt several times by the tribes ruling Mecca, who used it to house sacred objects, including the Black Stone, and as a shrine to Arabian tribal gods.

At the time of Muhammad, his tribe, the Quraysh, was in charge of the Ka'ba. Desert tribesmen, the Bedouin, and inhabitants of other cities would join the annual pilgrimage to the Ka'ba to worship and to trade. Caravan-raiding, common during the rest of the year, was suspended during the pilgrimage, making it a good time for travel and trade.

The prophet Muhammad, preaching monotheism and the Day of Judgment, faced mounting opposition in Mecca. The Quraysh persecuted and harassed him and he and his followers eventually migrated to Medina in 622 CE. In 630 CE, Muhammad and his followers returned to Mecca as conquerors and rededicated the Ka'ba as an Islamic house of worship. Henceforth, the traditional annual pilgrimage was to be a Muslim rite, the Hajj.

After Muhammad's victory, the Quraysh tribe rebuilt the Ka'ba with alternating courses of stone and wood. The inner space was divided into two rooms, one of which housed the Black Stone. The exterior was covered with the habrat cloth from Yemen.

Early Islamic chroniclers say that the Ka'ba was rebuilt during Muhammad's youth, and that there was some contention among the Quraysh, Mecca's ruling clan, as to who should have the honor of raising the Black Stone to its place in the new structure. Muhammad is said to have suggested that the Stone be placed on a cloak and that the various clan heads jointly lift the cloak and put the Stone into place.

During the conflict between Ibn Zubayr of Mecca and the Umayyad Caliph Mu'awiyah, the Ka'ba was set on fire and the Black Stone broke into three pieces. Its parts were reassembled with silver by Ibn Zubayr, who also ordered the rebuilding of the Ka'ba in stone and in accordance with the original dimensions believed to be set by Abraham, and paved the open space around it. The shrine at this time had two doors and a wooden staircase for roof access.

In 692, after taking over Mecca, Umayyad Caliph Abdul Malik bin demolished the Ka'ba and rebuilt it based on the Qurayshi version. The Abbasid Caliphs contributed the kiswa cover, a black cloth brought from Tanis in Egypt. The kiswa comprised of eight curtains (a pair on each side of the cube) embroidered with gold calligraphy expressing the Muslim shahada, or oath, "There is no God but Allah and Muhammed is the Prophet of Allah."

Following Mamluk rule of the Hijaz, which lasted from 1269 to 1517, Mecca came under the control of the Ottoman Sultans. In 1553, Sultan Süleyman I (1520-1566) renovated the roof of the Ka'ba and ordered the wooden ceiling painted with golden calligraphy and floral patterns.

Damaged in a flood in 1611, the Ka'ba was rebuilt once again by Sultan Murad IV (1623-1640) in 1629. The new foundation was laid according to Abraham's plan, while the upper structure was built with large granite blocks resting on a 25 cm-high marble base.

Three columns were built to support the roof on the inside; they were covered with golden decorations. Silver and golden lamps were suspended from the ceiling. The silver door offered by Sultan Süleyman was placed off-center on the northeast wall, two meters above ground level. The Ka'ba was then covered with two kiswas, a red cloth covered with a black one, that were annually replaced.

During the first Saudi extension to Masjid al-Haram in 1976, the interior of the Ka'ba was decorated with gold geometric motifs and inscribed with Quranic verses.

GOLD IN DUBAI

By Admas
Gold has remained a preferred investment through the economic downturn and has continued to attract capital flows given a climate of uncertainty and investor appetite for a US dollar and inflation hedging tool. This is evident in gold’s third quarter performance, which reflects continued flows into gold investment products, including ETFs. In the Middle East, the investment category has grown steadily on a sequential basis.
Trading in Dubai Gold Securities gathered pace in the three months ending 30 November 2009 with 53,190 shares traded during that period compared with a total of 27,691 shares in the first six months after its launch at the beginning of March 2009, representing an increase of 92%. Some 40,668 shares were traded in November alone with a total value of US$4.57 million.
The webinar, on December 16 at 2pm Dubai time (10am GMT), will feature a presentation by Rozanna Wozniak, Investment Research Manager, World Gold Council, on the GCC’s leading business news portal - ArabianBusiness.com. Participants in the webinar will have the opportunity to obtain further information by posting questions for Wozniak, following the presentation.

Commenting on the initiative, Grant Collins, Senior Managing Director, Dubai Commodity Asset Management, said, “Investors continue to appreciate the benefits that exposure to gold brings to their portfolio and we’re delighted to be able to provide them, in association with Arabian Business, an insight into the factors driving the metal’s recent performance as well as the ability to interact with such a respected analyst.”

GOLD USB

By hamans

I have to tell you, I hate these things. It’s basically a piece of ostentation in the shape of a USB drive. It’s a way of saying, “Look, work colleagues, how rich I am. Even my USB drive is made of gold, with diamonds. Imagine what my house looks like.”

So blatant is it in its ostentation that it doesn’t even bother to tell us how much storage capacity it has. The only important detail is that it comes in 14 or 18 carat gold and is available with ($3500) or without ($2800) diamonds. I’ll pass on the diamonds, thanks.

Gold has been a status symbol for quite a long time, it signifies power, wealth, and style to most people and up until now most USB drives haven’t been any of those things. What do you get when you take a tiny Pico series USB drive from Super Talent and add 24 karat gold? You get something that’s not only stylish and useful but well made and a bit classy.

Of the many new color varieties of laptop on the market, gold is sophisticated and has just enough flare to be distinctive without being overpowering. They're classy enough for business and your professional lifestyle, but luxurious enough to reflect your personal taste. A gold laptop would be a jazzy technical purchase.
Visit your local computer supply headquarters to compare models of gold laptops. Ask a salesperson to show you models available in that color and to explain to you the advantages and disadvantages of each brand. Be sure to consider the screen size, memory, and processing speed, and other features that are personally important for you--perhaps the operating system and a built-in video camera. Be prepared to consider other sources rather than make an immediate purchase, so ask the salesperson to write down any models you like.
Using your favorite search provider, run a search for "gold laptop." Note that two of the most popular gold laptops on the market are the CR290 by Sony and the European Cenio m1550 laptop. Follow the various links to compare these models, review their ratings and features and shop online. Contact a specialist using the "contact us" link, or look on the website for a list of locations that carry the models, and visit a local store.
Visit a computer customization website to have your laptop refinished for a fee. Great sites, like Computer Choppers, can paint your laptop or coat it in real 24k gold for the right fee. Ask for an estimate and review the website of the company you choose for photos of previous work and cost estimates.

GOLD FACIAL

By jambs

Gold (Au) is probably the most famous chemical element around the world. If you ask around, not many people will tell you they never heard of it.

For many centuries, it's been used as currency, before the invention of paper money (which was made because of the lack of gold), in jewelry, and in many industry areas. It's still considered the basis for the monetary standard and it's universally traded around the world.

The latest use of this extremely multivalent metal is in the health sector. The Chinese beauty treatment company Umosen has development a facial treatment which basically applies 24 karat gold onto the patient's face.

This special treatment is only available at selected spas and it comes with a hefty price tag: 30,000 yen (close to $300).

"A few years ago, there was caviar in everything. Next year, it'll probably be champagne," said Dr. Michele S. Green, a dermatologist with a practice on the Upper East Side who has been paid as a consultant to develop and test products for numerous cosmetics companies.

This is not the first attempt to use gold for medicinal purposes, as gold was once commonly used to heal leg ulcers. Research published last year by the American Chemical Society also suggested that nanoparticles of it (combined with radiation, among other things) could possibly help treat neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's.

This may or may not become the trendy new style, Dr. Green said. "But it doesn't sound sexy to say you're rubbing marine algae on your face."

On the other hand, the ultimate "therapeutic" use for gold was discovered thousands of years ago, when Mandarin nobility committed suicide by breathing gold powder that blocked their respiratory pathways

gold trade

By Syed M. Aslam

From time immemorial, gold has been respected as the best used precious metal not only due to its usage in ornaments but also as a widespread means of investment 'a saving for a rainy day'. No wedding ceremony in Pakistan is complete without gold jewellery which traditionally has become the most expensive item on the dowry list for parents of brides and also for the prospective grooms.

In Pakistan, like many other countries in the region, gold jewellery is more than a thing of beauty, a joy for everyone, particularly the women folks. It is the most credible mean of investment, which offers better returns than fixed deposits. The popular opinion is not unjustified as there has been a tremendous increase in the price of gold over the years.

Pakistan produces one the finest gold jewellery, particularly plain and generally studded, and its hand made designs are second to none in the world. It is also gifted with vast deposits of world class precious and semi-precious stones including rubies from Hunza Valley, pink emerald of Swat, and peridotes from Kohistan.

The gold trade in Pakistan is entirely dependent on imported gold the primary source of which is Dubai. The previous government granted licence to a single importer, 'ARY', for import of gold into the country. The present government has granted licences to two more importers making three companies responsible for all the gold imports into the country. The import of gold is subjected to duty of $ 1 per tola (11.54 grams), which translates into about Rs 4 per gram at current exchange rates.

Attempts to revive Saindak mine in District Chagai in the province of Balochistan, the first large scale metal mining project in Pakistan, has remained fruitless due to heavy capital investment. Repeated attempts to revive the Saindak Copper Gold Project to produce 15,810 tonnes of blister copper annually with gold containment of 1.47 tonnes, were futile due to an extremely uneconomical gold recovery cost. According to Mahmood Choksy, a gold jewellery exporter and also chairman of All Pakistan Gem Merchants and Jewellers Association, the cost to recover gold at Saindak is a staggering $ 400 per ounce, way above the international price of $ 284 per ounce.

According to World Gold Council (WGC), the marketing arm of world gold miners, gold demand in the country increased from 81.8 tonnes in 1997 98.2 tonnes in 1998 depicting a 20 per cent increase. India, the largest consumer of gold in the world, set a new record for the fourth consecutive year in 1997 as total gold demand increased by 11 per cent from 736 tonnes in 1997 to 815 tonnes in 1998.

WGC which started monitoring the gold demand in Pakistan for the first time in 1998, attributed the increased gold demand in Pakistan on the high affinity for gold in rural Pakistan, combined with slump in international prices in the same year, particularly in the third quarter when it touched as low as $ 288 per ounce.

In spite of economic sanctions, imposed on Pakistan after its option to go nuclear, the gold demand in the country remained unaffected in the country, primarily due to traditional belief that this is feasible to investment in gold.

Pakistan is entirely dependent on imported gold for jewellery manufacture and all other purposes. According to Mahmood Choksy, the bulk of gold import— about 40 per cent— is used in jewellery manufacturing while a similar quantity is being smuggled out of the country, mainly to India. The remaining 20 per cent, he added, is held for investment purposes in the form of biscuits. Industrial usage such as liquid gold in the manufacture of crockery and circuit board is negligible. However, jewellers have their own statistics about various statistics in the gold trade including its usage, ratio of new gold as compared to old, and local sales.

Muhammad Saleem, a local jeweller, said that 70 per cent of all gold imported is used by the jewellers, 5 per cent is used by the industry while the rest of the 25 per cent finds its way out of the country illegally.

Similarly, sources in the gold trade do not agree with the ratio between the use of new and old gold. Choksy says it is 40:60, the General Secretary of Hydri Sarrafa and Jewellery Group, Abdul Wahab put the ratio at 65:35 (65 per cent new, 35 per cent old) while another jeweller put the ratio at 70-80 per cent.

Saleem said that the ratio of usage of old and new gold by jewellers depends on the area where an individual shop is located— shops centred around posh areas such as Zaib-un-Nisa Street use comparatively lesser quantity of old Gold as compared to those located in lesser expensive markets. He put the ratio in the Saddar area at 40:60 (40 per cent old, 60 per cent new).

They also disagree with the trends of sales of gold jewellery during the last many years. Choksy said that sales of gold, particularly jewellery, has increased over the years due to an increase in population. His views were shared by Saleem who agreed that sales are ‘OK’ in spite of a substantial increase in the price of gold. Abdul Wahab, however, said that substantial increase in the cost of living and the subsequent decline in purchasing power have affected the sales. However, the ratio of visits by the buyers to the jewellers' shops has not declined but buyers prefer purchasing lighter jewellery.

Michael J. Kosares

"The rich old speculator Bernard M. Baruch forehandedly bought gold and gold shares after the 1929 Crash. Years later a suspicious Treasury Secretary asked him why. Because, Baruch replied, he was 'commencing to have doubts about the currency.' Many are beginning to doubt the the strength of the dollar as they well might. Following Baruch's example, they should lay in some gold as a hedge." -- James Grant, Grant's Interest Rate ObserverWe probably get that question more than any other -- pretty much on a daily basis. The answer, however, is not as straightforward as you might think. What you buy depends upon your goals. We usually answer the "What should I buy?" question with a question of our own: "Why are you interested in buying gold?"

If your goal is simply to capitalize on price movement, then bullion coins will serve your purposes. If you are interested in long-term asset preservation and you have additional concerns about capital and/or monetary controls -- a more complicated scenario -- then you might want to include the lower premium variety of pre-1933 European and American gold coins in the mix. These have been treated by the U.S. government since the 1930s as historical items, and, as a result, afford the privacy-minded investor a greater degree of safety than gold bullion.

But what I just gave you is a rough sketch. To develop a more refined strategy, we recommend spending time with your broker here at USAGOLD-Centennial Precious Metals. We can help you design a portfolio capable of weathering these uncertains times and in keeping with your long-term goals.

The short answer is 'When you need it.' You cannot approach gold the way you approach stock or real estate investments. Timing is not the real issue. The first question you need to ask yourself is whether or not you believe you need to own gold. Once you answer that question in the affirmative, there is no point in delaying your actual purchase. The real goal is to diversify so that your overall wealth is not compromised by economic dangers and uncertainties.

MOST EXPENSIVE DIAMOND RING

by jeremy

If you’re an aging bachelor and billionaire looking to wed someone half your age, you may want to look into expensive engagement rings. One such individual’s proposal to an ex-model involved a $1.5 million engagement ring. That may seem way out there, but it’s not even close to the most expensive ring in the world.

The Chopard Blue Diamond Ring is the ring that makes any other diamond ring look bad. Set with an enormous, oval-shaped blue diamond, the expensive ring also has diamond shoulders and an 18k white gold band paved with diamonds.

This platinum-set diamond ring is from the Elizabeth Collection of House of Taylor Jewelry, a Los Angeles-based international jewelry company whose principal shareholders include movie legend Elizabeth Taylor. The 5.98-carat oval-cut diamond in its center is “internally flawless” and surrounded by 3.96 carats of round brilliant diamonds in a floral design. Of course, star power doesn’t come cheap. This ring will cost you a cool $1.3 million.

Blue diamond is among the most expensive diamonds in the world. It is found among boron deposits, from whence it derives its shade. This particular gem weighs in at nine carats.

The world’s most expensive ring is valued at $16.26 million, enough to put a dent in the wallets of even the wealthiest individuals.

DIAMOND COLOURS

Key Points

  • Colour refers to a diamond's lack of colour, grading the whiteness of a diamond.

  • A colour grade of D is the highest possible, while Z is the lowest.

  • Blue Nile only sells diamonds with a colour grade of J or higher.

Colour manifests itself in a diamond as a pale yellow. This is why a diamond's colour grade is based on its lack of colour. The less colour a diamond has, the higher its colour grade. After cut, colour is generally considered the second most important characteristic when selecting a diamond. This is because the human eye tends to detect a diamond's sparkle first, and colour second. At Blue Nile, you'll find only the finest diamonds with colour graded D-J. Diamonds graded J or better are colourless or near-colourless, with colour that is typically undetectable to the unaided eye.

DIAMOND CAR

By Ken Gronbach

If ever there ever were a love/hate relationship, it’s with humans and the snooze alarm.

“Snooze alarm” is an oxymoron and the technology occupies a dubious position in our culture. Until the snooze alarm became part of the alarm clock in the 1950s, the transition from slumber to consciousness was a clean break. You were one or the other. Sure, sometimes you would sleep through your alarm, but that was still sleep. With a snooze alarm you can alternate from being asleep to awake in nine-minute intervals. It would be interesting to see research on how many times the average person hits the snooze alarm. Myself, I am a two-, sometimes three-hitter.

We were visiting friends not long ago and as I am given to do, I snooped. A black-and-white 50s-era photo displayed behind a glass door in a china closet caught my eye.

The picture obviously was a subject of pride. In the photo, a man is sitting in a two-seater sports car, which I couldn’t identify. At first I thought it was a King Midget or maybe a Crosley. But according to my friend Shirley, “The car is a Dimond and that’s my dad, Herbert Merrill Dimond.”

Her dad built the car in 1955, but not from a kit with directions. He designed it exactly the way Corvettes were designed. He started with a clay model and finished by hand laying the fiberglass himself over a wood frame built on Crosley running gear. So, I was close.

“He only wanted to build one and never had ambitions to mass produce the Dimond,” Shirley says. “Being unique was very important to him.”

He drove it every day for years. It had a convertible top, but it was seldom used. The Dimond actually had a few very interesting, luxury features. One was the gauge console on the driver’s side that you straddled, a hood scoop, ‘54 Chevy taillights. And it had seat belts, which weren’t standard in those days.

Gold is a pleasure

This plant, also known as false flax or German sesame, has a history of use across mainland Europe from at least Stone Age times. It is native to Eastern Europe and Southwest Asia, where wild weedy forms survive; other weedy types have evolved and are found in cereal and flax crops. The developed crop form was widely grown across Europe until the 1 950s. The seed yields an oil which is of excellent nutritional quality and was also used as an illuminant and for cosmetic purposes, while the stems were utilised for making brushes, packaging, and thatching temporary buildings. There were additional uses of the green crop as fodder and of the seed for fattening poultry, while the protein-rich press cake was a valued livestock food. Small areas have been grown in recent years for use in the soap and cosmetic industries and as a constituent of birdseed; the crop has recently been the subject of experiments in Europe and Canada to assess its future potential.
